MicroToons Launch Event

MicroToons 

MicroToons is a collaborative project which empowers people with autism and their peers to engage in science, technology and art. The project is a partnership between Dr Rina Fu (Scientist-Author-Illustrator), Red Bird Creative (an innovative animation studio) and 4LifeSkills (service provider for people with disabilities).

 

MicroToons is an animated science story produced by people with autism. This includes design of story characters (e.g. cells and nasty microbes) from pencil sketches to computer graphics and animation to moving characters. The 3-min animation will show-case in a launch event on Monday 9th August 2021 through the 4LifeSkills network and the general public along with a stage show by Dr Rina and  science activity stations tailored to include people with disabilities.

School Children will meet Dr Rina for an interactive time of game, fun and learning, sing-along and experiment! Be inspired about Dr Rina's journey to be an author and illustrator as she leads the audience to discover hidden secrets embedded in her debut children's picture story book - My Mad Scientist Mummy.

National Science    Week

Meet the Scientist, Sign Me Up!

Meet the Scientists – Sign me up! aims to engage Deaf and hard-of-hearing children aged six to 15 years, their siblings and peers with science, providing them with exposure to the discipline as a career pathway, building confidence in scientific concepts and inspiring them. Two three-hour accessible events will be held in metropolitan Perth & Bunbury, each with six scientists from different fields sharing their research field and engaging the children in relevant hands-on activities.

Art Meets Science -

Crystals Rock Family Science Workshop

Get ready for some family fun with Dr Rina in this interactive workshop. Bring out your scientific and artistic best as you embark on an adventure and create a beautiful keepsake. We’ll examine some large and some microscopic crystals found in nature, the human body and even parasites! As a treat for rock collectors, amateur or expert, we’ll enjoy a special viewing of some rare collections from the Edward de Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum, guided by our guest geologist, Kailah Thorn from Perth, Western Australia.

Please pre-book for this event to receive the essential equipment list that you’ll need to enjoy the full experience. This event is for families with children aged between 5 - 12 years.

Calling all little scientists across Australia and beyond to join Dr Rina for an online, live and interactive Little Scientist Workshop on Blood & Stuff. Not for the faint-hearted, recommended for brave little scientists only! Dissections may be involved! Get a glimpse of real, still-alive blood cells under the microscope… Find out what can eat your blood, alive…

Join both workshops in this series!
 

On the lighter side, Dr Rina will share about her ‘bloody’ research through a song performance, realtime experiments and for those with good typing fingers, ask away during our Q & A!

‘My Mad Scientist Mummy’ picture storybook is an educational and delightful way to share my passion for science and for microbes!’. For pre-reading, the storybook is available online and from your local bookstore with proceeds supporting science outreach.
